The line that passes through San Clemente had closed in April due to threat caused by expanding landslide

Travelers passing between San Diego and Orange counties can once again ride passenger rail lines starting Saturday following a month-long, emergency closure so workers could thwart threats from a nearby, expanding landslide.

The Orange County Transportation Authority announced Friday that both the Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner rail lines passing through San Clemente could reopen as the majority of work needed to stabilize a slope behind the tracks had been completed and the line was deemed safe for a return to passenger service.through the corridor was halted due to a landslide originating on the slope behind the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens patio.

The April closure was the third lengthy disruption of rail service since 2021, and it occurred after the line had only been reopened for less than two weeks following a six-month suspension caused by a different landslide. The last closure was caused by a recurring landslide two miles south on a bluff below the Cyprus Shore community, which began gradually moving again last fall. The line remained closed from Sept. 30 to April 17 during a $13.7 million stabilization project to drill steel anchors more than 130 feet deep into the bedrock.
