The M/V Columbia docked Wednesday morning in Wrangell and remained in port several hours after the ferry was scheduled to depart. The fire was isolated to an ice machine, state transportation officials say.
Ferry crews responded to a fire in an ice machine on the M/V Columbia on Wednesday Aug. 23, 2023, authorities say. A small number of passengers and crew were treated for smoke inhalation in Wrangell, where the ferry was docked.
A state transportation spokeswoman said the fire started in cardboard near an ice machine and was quickly extinguished. Of the nine people taken to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation, two or three were crew members, she said. None required medical care. A passenger aboard the ferry said the vessel had filled with smoke but several people who needed medical attention were already back aboard by 9 a.m.
