After years of waiting and finally receiving a new heart, Patrick Holland has returned home ready to start a new chapter.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - After years of waiting and multiple lost or turned down opportunities, 57-year-old Patrick Holland has finally come home with a new heart.

For four years, Patrick Holland waited to get a heart transplant, but he’s battled congestive heart failure for much longer. Inheriting the issue from his father, Holland experienced his first heart attack at the age of 29 years. Holland watched his father and uncle deal with heart issues as well, his father dying from complications at age of 52. His uncle, at 48.

Ten years after his first heart attack, Holland had his second. This time, he furthered his care by getting angioplasty surgery, followed by a pacemaker, a defibrillator, then a bypass surgery. Unfortunately, the heart attacks didn’t stop and became more frequent. As a father of seven kids, he knew he needed a more permanent treatment. Finally, Holland was placed on the waitlist for a heart transplant.

Returning to Interior Alaska on Wednesday, July 12, the North Pole resident shed tears as he reunited with family and friends, ready to take on a new chapter in his life. He now says that he is ready to take on the challenges that await him at home. This includes providing for his family, returning to work and continuing the life long journey of caring for his new heart.
