The first time Patti Smith performed in Marin County she was a streetwise New York rocker in her late 20s touring with her band behind a sensational debut album, 1975’s “Horses,” which Rolling Stone would later hail as one of the greatest of all time.

Last week, Smith returned to a sold-out, 820-seat Angelico Hall to discuss “A Book of Days,” a year’s collection of daily photographs and heartfelt commentary celebrating the objects, animals and places she holds dear as well as the people who have inspired her, both the famous — hipster heroes William Burroughs, Albert Camus, Sylvia Plath, Dylan Thomas, Allen Ginsberg and the like — and the unsung and sadly forgotten, such as Alice Augusta Ball, a Black chemist who discovered a cure for...

From time to time, she took questions from the audience that had been given to her on index cards beforehand. One asked, what inspired her in the world today. “Well, if any of you had read the back of ‘Horses,’ you’d know they were saying that I was beyond gender,” she said.Sidelined from performing by the pandemic, she began documenting her quotidian life with posts on Instagram in 2018, starting with a photo of her open palm and the simple greeting “Hello everybody.

“The book addresses workers I admire, whether they be mathematicians, scientists, sculptors, poets, mothers, whatever one puts their energy into,” she said as a segue into a song, “My Blakean Year,” a salute to the 18th century English poet William Blake from her 2004 album, “Trampin’” A photo of her holding a picture of Bob Dylan in front of her face led to another song, Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings,” a tune she’d been listening to and singing since she was a teenager.
