Nancy Pelosi accused Trump of a 'coverup' as tensions mount over access to the president’s personal tax returns:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday accused President Donald Trump of being “engaged in a coverup” amid a tense standoff between White House and the Democratic-controlled House over access to sensitive documents and testimony from key advisers.
Democrats have been blocked by the Trump administration in their efforts to gain access to the president’s personal tax returns or to interview former White House lawyer Don McGahn. Attorney General William Barr has also declined to testify in the House after a dispute over the rules of the hearing. The president, for his part, has accused the Democrats of going “on a fishing expedition” after the two-year Mueller investigation into alleged Trump campaign ties to Russia failed to find evidence of a criminal conspiracy. He’s urged and in some cases ordered current and former White House officials not to testify.
“We are confronting what might be the largest, broadest cover-up in American history,” Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters. If a House inquiry “leads to other avenues including impeachment,” the Maryland Democrat said, “so be it.”
