Pelosi doesn't commit to debt-ceiling vote before August congressional recess
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday was noncommittal about the timing of a vote to raise the U.S. debt ceiling before the August recess, as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has urged. "We'll see about the timing," she told reporters at a weekly news conference.
The California Democrat said she doesn't want "any doubt" about the U.S.'s credit but also repeated she's seeking to raise spending caps in discussions with the administration. This week, the Bipartisan Policy Center estimated the U.S. government could exhaust the ability to pay its bills in the first half of September.
