Imagine getting an unsolicited $3,000 stationary bike from your husband for Christmas, then proceeding to film a series of vlogs for a year to show your husband “how much it changed [you].” That’s deserving of a drink, right?To recap: Last week, a holiday ad from Peloton, the makers of the high-end stationary bicycles loved by suburban moms, sent the Internet ablaze for portraying the storyline we mentioned above.
In Reynolds’s ad, cheekily titled “The Gift That Doesn’t Give Back,” Peloton Wife is out at the bar with two friends. She looks glassy-eyed, exhausted, and in a daze. Finally, she speaks, telling her friends “This gin is really smooth,” as they nod approvingly and enthusiastically, before telling her “you’re safe here.” Peloton wife then gulps down the gin as the trio toasts to “new beginnings.
