The event reignited a debate over free speech at U-Va. after some on campus said the former vice president should not be given a platform because his rhetoric is dangerous. On Tuesday, Pence told the crowd, “We need this generation to be the freedom generation, starting right here at U-Va.”

The crowd chuckled when Pence said he had heard there was a “little controversy” preceding his visit.did not deserve a platform at U-Va., and that hateful rhetoric was “violent,” sparking backlash.Pence told the crowd, “The antidote to ‘cancel culture’ is freedom.
