The university also said it will continue recommending, but not requiring, COVID-19 vaccinations.
Until the end of Penn State’s spring 2022 semester, the university required indoor masking at campuses whose counties reflect a high community level from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, Penn State will only recommend masks in those areas.
Over the past two years, Penn State provided quarantine and isolation spaces for all University Park students through hundreds of single-occupancy rooms in a few of its Eastview Terrace residence halls. Now, the university will offer 40 on-campus rooms only to students who live on campus, leaving off-campus students to quarantine or isolate at home.
In a statement, Penn State said it based its smaller quarantine and isolation capacity on usage in previous semesters, plus updated CDC guidelines and projections for the university’s fall semester. “For these reasons, we believe this is sufficient capacity for isolation spaces for students who reside in residence halls, and plans have been made for expansion capacity if needed during the first two weeks of the semester,” university spokesperson Wyatt DuBois said. “As noted, these spaces will be prioritized for students who reside on campus in residence halls.”
