A bit of trivia for you to enjoy as Thon celebrates its 50th year
, Penn State University’s annual, 46-hour dance marathon held to raise money for cancer research and support children stricken with cancer.With that in mind we decided to cultivate a collection of some noteworthy trivia — provided by Thon and Penn State Health officials — about the annual fundraising event, billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.The first dance marathon took place in 1973 in Penn State University’s HUB Ballroom.
The name of Four Diamonds was taken from an essay that Christopher Millard wrote shortly before his death. It tells of a knight’s quest for four diamonds – courage, wisdom, honesty and strength – to overcome an evil sorceress. In 1997, the first Family Carnival was held, an annual celebration in which student volunteers prepare carnival booths for the children to enjoy.The first Thon 5K run was held in 2002.
In 2013 Thon hit the $100 million mark for total funds raised since it began. The chart below shows how much money has been raised each year since 2011.Up until 2017, about 15,000 student volunteers would stand at intersections and street corners to collect money in large cans from passing cars and pedestrians.
