Authorities are still tracking escaped inmate Danelo Cavalcante across Pennsylvania, and hundreds of law enforcement officials are contributing to the manhunt that has continued for 12 days.
Cavalcante, 34, escaped from Chester County Prison on Aug. 31 by pushing himself onto the prison roof. He was convicted of stabbing Deborah Brandao, 33, his ex-girlfriend, to death in front of her two young children in 2021 and was serving a life sentence for murder without parole.Here is a timeline of what is known about Cavalcante's escape and evasion of capture.Cavalcante escaped around 9 a.m. on Aug. 31. Investigators said his escape was undetected for over an hour.
The U.S. Marshals Service joined the search. Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said during a news conference that authorities did not believe anyone was helping Cavalcante evade capture.On Sept. 2, a residential surveillance camera captured Cavalcante about a mile and a half from the prison. He was wearing pants, a light-colored T-shirt, and white sneakers. At the time, he had long black curly hair and was wearing a backpack.
Because of this, authorities widened their 2-mile search to south of their original perimeter. In an effort to draw Cavalcante out, law enforcement broadcast a message from his mother in Portuguese from speakers in cars and helicopters. In the message, she asked her son to"surrender peacefully." Kennett Consolidated School District closed schools on Sept. 5 and extended the closure into Sept. 6, and Longwood Gardens was also closed on Sept. 6 due to the manhunt.A Chester County spokesperson confirmed that the prison guard on duty when Cavalcante escaped was fired. It is unknown whether he is the same tower guard placed on administrative leave.
