All 203 state House and 25 of 50 state Senate seats are up for grabs in 2022.
The battlefield is taking shape for majority control of Pennsylvania’s legislature in the 2023-24 session, and so far Republicans are starting with some baked-in leads in both chambers.
Of those seats with fall contests, 54 are currently held by Democrats, 50 are held by Republicans, and one is currently vacant. In the 50-seat Senate, meanwhile, because only half the chamber is up for election this year, the Republicans start with 18 seats, counting their 15 retained seats and three incumbents without challenges this year; while the Democrats start with 13, assuming a seat recently vacated by Philadelphian John Sabatina stays in the party’s hands in a special election later this year.
On the Republican ballot, the contest is between David Buell, the former Cumberland County prothonotary, and Jennie Jenkins-Dallas, a former Harrisburg police officer who formerly ran as a Democrat for Harrisburg City Council. On the Democratic ballot, five-term House incumbent Patty Kim will face challenges from community advocate Heather McDonald and former Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson.
