U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he sees no evidence of a more representative Taliban government after the group appointed old-guard leaders to top positions

, which includes former leaders ousted 20 years ago by the U.S. invasion and members of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, dashed international hopes of providing more representative leadership, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday.

“I think the whole international community was hopeful that they would be as inclusive as they said they would be weeks and months ago, but we’ve not seen evidence of that early on,” Mr. Austin said.
