Valerie and Eric Castillo, both 40, set off on a wide-ranging trek with their infant daughter to inspire families to stay fit and enjoy the great outdoors.
At 2 weeks old, she’d traveled to the Grand Canyon. She learned to crawl in the Rocky Mountains. She took her first steps in Utah at Zion National Park. An upcoming People magazine spotlights Journey Castillo, San Antonio’s youngest explorer who visited every national park in the United States by her third birthday. Journey’s accomplishment unfolds on the magazine’s “Smile!” page in the Nov. 13 issue.

The expedition started in 2020 at Pike’s Peak in Colorado when Journey was just days old, with eyes opened wide. Their sojourn ended last month in Alaska at Katmai National Park and Preserve.

She’s such a little person who can make a huge impact across the United States. It’s a gift, and hopefully, she can continue giving the gift and making a difference.” Though they’ve reached their goal, there’s still work ahead for the trio. They plan to meet with the director of the National Park Service in Washington, D.C.
