Big Time Adolescence, now available on Hulu, gives Pete Davidson his movie star moment
Davidson has been a lightning rod for gossip over the past year or so, for both his dating life and his openness about his struggles with substance abuse and depression. I’m not sure where I really landed on Davidson before seeingterribly funny. What an unexpected delight, then, to watch him giving such a winning and nuanced performance in first-time writer-directorfilm. He may be playing a version of himself, so his range has yet to be tested.
Davidson plays Zeke, the burnout best friend of a high-school kid, Mo . Zeke used to date Mo’s sister, but after the breakup, he and Mo just kept hanging out—Mo drawn in by Zeke’s laid-back anarchy, Zeke happy to be adored in such a pure and ardent way. Orley illustrates the contours of this curious relationship in thoughtful ways, giving careful, balanced consideration to both its problems and its benefits.
Gluck is terrific as well, reading as an actual kid, not some teen archetype made for the movies. That’s a credit to Orley, too. Rarely indoes anything feel canned or beyond the realm of the credible. All the characters in the film seem to have inner lives; we believe that they exist past the confines of the film. It’s a pleasure to be in their warm and appealing company, even as the proceedings take a turn for the mildly dire.The film isn’t a revelation in terms of content or form.
It’s possible, of course, that I’m just sick with a particularly malignant strain of festival fever. That can happen at Sundance, especially with big crowd-pleaser comedies. But I thinkcould be legit, a fresh and humanely funny-enough film to survive the trip to sea level. It sings the most when Davidson is on-screen, shuffling around with his lanky gait, screwing things up with the best of intentions. Orley is careful to not overplay or rely too heavily on Davidson’s dry stoner wit.
