Pfizer will seek U.S. government approval for a booster shot to follow its two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, according to a company news release.
Aug. 27, 2021 -- Pfizer and its European partner, BioNTech, plan to seek U.S. government approval for a booster shot to follow Pfizer’s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine,Pfizer has previously said the vaccine’s effectiveness wanes over time. A clinical trial showed 306 people who received a third dose of the vaccine five to eight months after their second dose had levels of neutralizing antibodies 3.3 times the levels found after the second dose, the news release said.
U.S. health officials last week said people should receive COVID-19 vaccine booster shots 8 months after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Pfizer said participants in the clinical trial had minor reactions such as injection site pain, fatigue headaches, and muscle and joint pain.
