Phil And Penny Knight Give $75 Million To Stanford University To Study Brain Resilience

Stanford University is launching a new multidisciplinary scientific effort to study brain resilience and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

, and is made possible by a $75 million gift from Nike founder Philip H. Knight, who earned his MBA from Stanford in 1962, and his wife, Penny.Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute

, will be Tony Wyss-Coray, the D. H. Chen Distinguished Professor II of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford. “This initiative will examine long-standing assumptions about the causes of neurodegeneration and advance our understanding of how to maintain brain resilience into old age, which is a cornerstone of quality of life,” said Stanford President, in the university’s announcement. “As one of the field’s leading experts in brain degeneration and aging, Tony Wyss-Coray is perfectly positioned to lead this important endeavor.

The Phil and Penny Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience will be a collaborative effort involving several of Stanford’s leading researches in medicine, neurosciences, engineering, human biology, chemistry, psychology, and other related fields. According to Stanford’s announcement, the initiative’s goal is “to spark new ideas and innovations and take knowledge to a point where it is possible to promote brain rejuvenation and stave off certain brain disorders, as well as prevent and treat cognitive decline.”
