Philippine defence chief says expanded US military presence in the country does not mean it is ‘preparing for war’ but is aimed at enhancing its 'ability' to defend itself from 'external threats”
Defence department chief Carlito Galvez says granting the US greater access to its military bases is meant to"enhance its ability" to defend the country against"external threats".
"The geopolitical situation is becoming more precarious by the day," Carlito Galvez, office-in-charge of the defence ministry, said in a statement on Thursday. EDCA allows US access to Philippine bases for joint training, pre-positioning of equipment and building of facilities such as runways, fuel storage and military housing, but not a permanent presence.
"Do not let us tell them that they are our enemies because of the US," said Mamba. "Let them have their own war."
