Gov.-elect Shapiro nominates former Philly election official to Cabinet post
Al Schmidt, the former Philadelphia city commissioner who was the lone Republican to oversee that city's 2020 elections, is Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro's nominee for Secretary of the Commonwealth. That is a position that among other duties involves being the state's chief election official.
Shapiro announced on Thursday that he is nominating 51-year-old Al Schmidt to this Cabinet post that has grown over the past three years from an obscure position to a highly scrutinized one.
