“My Paper Dreams,” featuring the work of Elizabeth “Libby” Schoettle—better known as Phoebe New York—will be on display at Horsens Art Museum in Copenhagen.

. Opening on the heels of Copenhagen Fashion Week, the show runs from August 21, 2021, through January 30, 2022.

Phoebe’s face, if not her name, will be familiar to those who spend a time in downtown Manhattan. Since 2015 this round-faced, sassy, highly opinionated, and somewhat neurotic sprite has held court, illegally, on lamp posts and such. Phoebe is the brainchild of Schoettle, who describes her creation as her alter-ego. “It’s very important for me to recognize her as that because she does the things that I’m afraid of, and I am able to put into her things that inspire me, that are in turn inspiring other people,” the artist said on a call. This give and take is more than personal, it’s part and parcel of street art, which is essentially an interactive game of hide and seek played by the artist and viewer.

For Schoettle, the creation and evolution of Phoebe is a continuing journey of self discovery and revelation that was made possible by the salvation Schoettle found in the Big Apple. “I didn’t know where I fit in, I was very depressed,” she says of her Pennsylvania upbringing. “But when I got to New York City, I fell in love. I mean, it was literally like the magic was here, instant, instant, instant.” Phoebe, she says, “represents my love for New York.

Ironically, Schoettle’s journey towards Phoebe started in Paris, in 2001, when the artist photographed a still life of pants, sweater, and jar of fluff on the bathroom floor, and envisioned a body. High on the rush she got from that creative act, Schoettle pushed on, shooting portraits of her clothes and antiques.
