90s rave music is making a BIG comeback

— embraced gay, Black, and brown people in places like London, Paris, and New York City. What was being blasted from the speakers was a mix of European techno and American House music — an amalgamation of synth-heavy instrumentation that challenged conventional electronic dance production, giving an intense feeling of escapism. Rave music eventually evolved to describe several genres including house, breakbeat, hardcore techno, jungle, and trance.

If 90’s comebacks are aided through the help of Depop or TikTok, the renaissance around rave music is being spearheaded by young and mostly independent music artists. Another marker for the global reach that rave culture is gaining is in the small pockets of rave communities springing up amongst young people in different parts of the world. For example, in Nigeria, rave culture is finding its footing. There is Sweat It Out, a monthly rave party held in Lagos hosted by a group of ravers that sets itself out to be an accommodating party scene for all young Nigerians.free space’t,'" one of the Sweat It Out organizers, Ebi Atte, says.

Other EDM experts however are not quite convinced that this is a renaissance as much as it is a different iteration of a subculture that never really died. “I don't know if it's a renaissance per se,” says Andrew Ryce, a music editor at electronic dance magazine. “I think that Gen Z is just more tuned into what's happening, and more open to other kinds of music, that they naturally gravitate towards electronic music and rave culture.
