Returning for the 2023 season as the Missions' highest-ranked pitching prospect at No. 16 in the Padres organization, per MLB.com, Wolf showed his promise with five no-hit innings on the road Friday against Tulsa, lifting San Antonio to its lone win of the season-opening three-game set. A 2021 fourth-round pick out of West Virginia, the 6-foot-7 Wolf has completed seven innings just once in his two previous Minor League seasons but entered 2023 ahead of pace after working with the Padres through preseason camp.The Missions’ roster boasts only three of the Padres' top 30 prospects and none of the top 10, as Wolf is joined by outfielder Korry Howell at No. 13 and outfielder Tirso Ornelas at No. 28.
Howell, a speedy utility player who has struggled with strikeouts in his career, is off to a slow start in 2023 and has yet to reach base across 13 at-bats while striking out eight times.After ranking second in the Texas League in batting average last season with a .266, Missions’ hitters were mostly dormant through the first three games of the season, sitting last in the league with a .128 average.
