Residents of the Comal County city say they are concerned about the impact of concrete dust and increased traffic.

Some residents in Garden Ridge are fighting a new concrete batch plant that is to be built within the city limits. The land for the plant can be seen beyond the fence of this cemetery in Garden Ridge. In a leafy thicket on his family farm in Garden Ridge, Kevin Wuest stands at the foot of his great-great-great grandfather’s grave. Trees and brush have slightly overgrown the cemetery, but the headstones are still clear.

Residents of Garden Ridge — a town of about 4,000 just across the Comal County line from Bexar County — say they are concerned the plant would lead to increased dust and traffic, as well as the proposed site’s proximity to homes, a church and a preschool. Batch plants combine raw materials to make ready-mix concrete.

The company now plans go to the city to seek a variance and a special use permit, both of which the city says it requires for construction to begin. The meeting will include a public hearing. Wuest, along with many other Garden Ridge residents, plans on attending. Of the 5,000 acres that makes up Garden Ridge, the Servtex limestone quarry takes up about half, which is why Robb Erickson, the city’s mayor, said the new plant would be too much. The quarry already has another concrete plant on site.
