Standing outside the Lofts at the Ballpark Tuesday morning, Rep. JacksonLeeTX18 called the plans to move forward with the demolition, despite a federally-mandated pause on the highway expansion, “pretty tragic.”
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson speaks outside the Lofts at the Ballpark, which are set to be demolished to make way for the I-45 expansion, at a press conference on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, in Houston.Community activists and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee separately denounced the slated demolition of nearly 400 housing units near Minute Maid Park for the Texas Department of Transportation’s expansion of Interstate 45.
“There is sizable evidence that the communities are Hispanic and African American ... have suffered at the hands of a design that did not present any input of these communities,” Jackson Lee said. The group returned to the Lofts at the Ballpark Tuesday night for a protest and march through the expansion project’s footprint east of downtown, and then planned to gather for a social hour at 8th Wonder Brewery.
TxDOT’s $9-billion plan for the freeway would rebuild and widen I-45 from downtown Houston north to Beltway 8, and reroute I-45 to follow the current path of Interstate 10 and Interstate 69 near downtown.
