JUST IN: Plug Power taps ABB for $300 million hydrogen plants

ABB will provide the electrical systems for two U.S. hydrogen plants being built by fuel-cell provider Plug Power.Plug Power taps ABB for $300M hydrogen plantsThe first of the company's two new plants, "Project Gateway," will be North America's largest production facility for so-called. Located in Gennessee County in Upstate New York, it is set to produce 45 metric tons of liquid hydrogen daily.

Companies are racing to deploy clean-burning hydrogen as a fuel in vehicles — especially those where batteries face greater technical and economic challenges, such as heavy trucks — and as a power source.Plug Power says that the hydrogen will be used for the transportation and logistics sectors. Customers have signed on to buy power from the plants, but when asked, Kopczynski cited the company's current big-name clients: "The ones that we talk about are Amazon, Wal Mart, Home Depot, General Motors."Green hydrogen uses renewable energy to power the electrolysis process that separates hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The electrolysis process at Plug Power's New York plant, for example, will run on hydropower.

Miss Manners: Mind if I plug in my car?Miss Manners: Mind if I plug in my car?DEAR MISS MANNERS: My car is a plug-in hybrid, which means it runs on electricity for about 20 or 30 miles, then switches to run on gas. Gas is needed on long trips, but since electric driving makes fewer emissions, we try to drive on electricity as many miles as we possibly can. If I stop to visit a friend at the limit of (or beyond) my electric-only range, what does etiquette say about asking if I can plug in the car for a bit of a charge?
