Pikachu can talk--and so can the other Pokemon.

Series as long-running as Pokémon are bound to be riddled with mysteries, and one of the biggest has huge implications for Ash & Pikachu's relationship. In 2017, Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You! climaxed with Ash desperately asking Pikachu why he wouldn't return to his pokéball. Audiences were stunned when he received an answer in plain English. Since then, the reality of the scene has been the subject of heated debate.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The general consensus is that Pikachu's confession was the result of some dream state that Ash slipped into. But, while he was certainly weakened and appeared to be on the edge of blacking out, Ash didn't appear disoriented enough to hallucinate about talking animals. He was cognizant enough to protect Pikachu as best he could in his condition.

Pikachu Speaks to Ash & Reveals Why He Won't Get in His Pokéball Ash's world is one where all kinds of impossible things are common occurrences. If abandoned toys can be brought back to life as Pokémon, it only makes sense that some of this everyday magic would rub off on the humans. All the characters have deep relationships with their Pokémon, to the point they seem to understand whatever messages the little animals are trying to convey.

It's not as impossible as it sounds. According to lore in the games, humans and Pokémon used to be one and the same. They shared common ancestors until they started evolving away from one another. Though different, the various species continued to develop alongside each other. It would make sense if this co-evolution resulted in a lingering ability to understand one another's speech. Like other traits, the strength of this ability can vary from person to person.

Why, then, are Pokémon not going around and talking plainly all the time? The simple answer is that they are, but the audience doesn't understand them because they're different from the humans in the show. It's similar to other media like The Secret Life of Pets, where the audience can understand the animals when they talk, but the humans in the movie can't. In the case of Pokémon, the roles are reversed.
