The pursuit ended in Barrio Logan when officers used spike strips to puncture the tires of the pickup used in the chase

Two men were arrested Sunday after one of them allegedly threw a handgun into San Diego Bay during a pursuit, police said.

The chase began after San Diego police officers tried to stop a pickup with expired tags about 1:15 p.m. on Ocean View Boulevard near South 33rd Street on the boundary between Logan Heights and Stockton. The driver led officers on a pursuit through National City, southeastern San Diego and into Coronado. On the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, an officer saw a passenger in the truck throw a handgun into the bay, police Lt. Arturo Swadner told OnScene TV.The driver then returned to San Diego, where officers used spike strips, which punctured three of the pickup tires, Swadner said.

The driver stopped on Logan Avenue near the Interstate 5 on-ramp in Barrio Logan, and he and his passenger surrendered, police Officer David O’Brien said. The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and the passenger was arrested on a warrant for driving under the influence of alcohol. A Harbor police dive team was going to possibly search for the handgun. No further information was immediately available.
