The efforts in the San Diego Police Department are the latest to target a surge in fentanyl overdoses in the region
In an effort to combat the opioid overdose crisis, the San Diego Police Department is rolling out two new initiatives: police dogs trained to detect the drug fentanyl and software used to map where overdoses have occurred in the city.
Illicit fentanyl is oftentimes pressed into pills and laced with other drugs. Many times the pills are sold as other drugs, such as oxycodone, and users are unaware the counterfeit pills contain fentanyl. The presentations, she said, are part of larger conversations that are expected to help the city figure out how to further combat the issueIn November, Mayor Todd Gloria issued an executive order that called on the San Diego Police Department to prioritize enforcement of crimes tied to fentanyl sales. The order also directed city officials to begin developing a plan to use an estimated $30 million in national settlement funds the city expects to receive over the next eight years.
Brown told the Union-Tribune that the Police Department rolled out the mapping software Feb. 1. When officers respond to overdose calls, he said, they input the address in the system, and that creates maps that show non-fatal and fatal overdoses. Brown said the dogs will be used to help look for drugs during searches, evidence that could help detectives build their cases against people who distribute the drug.During last week’s Public Safety Committee meeting, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cindy Cipriani outlined other efforts to hold drug dealers and traffickers accountable.
