A California police officer was fired this week after a lawsuit uncovered excessive force during the arrest of a burglary suspect that went unreported.

After Mendoza was placed under arrest and into a police car, Schmidt's body camera apparently showed blood on Mendoza's mouth.

An Elk Grove, California, police officer was fired and a sergeant resigned after an internal investigation revealed that neither officer reported the June 2019 alleged excessive force to a burglary suspect.Afterward, an unidentified police officer spoke to Schmidt about what happened during the arrest and he admitted to the kick.

When Mendoza was taken to jail, he vomited and complained about the head injury. Merin said his client was eventually taken to the hospital where a CT scan revealed he had a serious brain injury that gave him a"50/50 chance" of survival. Mendoza is in custody at Rio Consumnes Correctional Center for an unrelated robbery and assault case, his attorney said. He is ineligible for bail and his next court appearance is April 16, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
