The in-fighting within House GOP ranks is heating up following former Speaker Kevin McCarthy being ousted.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, talks with reporters as House Republicans meet again behind closed doors to find a path to elect a new speaker after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., dropped out of the race Thursday night, at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Oct. 13, 2023. WSYX spoke with Mehek Cooke, a Republican lawyer and political strategist, to gain insight on Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan’s"He has always supported individuals and members," Cooke said.

Jordan, a Republican from Troy, serves as the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He is also a founding member of the Conservative House Freedom Caucus, and a close ally of former President Donald Trump.Jim Jordan has led massive key investigations as chair of the Judiciary Committee," Cooke said. "He's fought against weaponization of government, and he has shown his key investigation to inform American people of what’s going on in D.C.

"I think I can bring our team together; that’s what I've said all along," Jordan said earlier this week. But, at this point, Jordan does not have the full support of the party. In a private party line vote, he came away with 152 votes for him, and 55 against–far short of the 217 he would need in a formal vote on the House floor.Traditional Republicans can break away from extreme and partner with Democrats on a bipartisan path forward so we can end the recklessness and get back to doing the business of the American people," Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries said earlier this week.

House lawmakers will be back at work Monday. This is a fight that’s stretched on for weeks and it’s unclear how much longer it could last.
