and promised to help persuade Union Pacific to do more to clean up the longstanding toxic contamination in their neighborhoods.

What they didn’t say: They have also been accepting campaign money from Union Pacific’s political action committee. The Union Pacific Corp. Fund for Effective Government in the past five years has funneled $15,500 to state Sen. Carol Alvarado, $9,500 to state Sen. Borris Miles and $6,500 to Mayor Sylvester Turner, according to Federal Election Commission records. All three are Democrats, although the PAC has donated to an array of other elected officials from both parties.

Miles and Alvarado last received contributions in March, according to the records, and Turner in 2019.Decades later, hazardous sludge continues to leak in Fifth Ward. Will a state meeting bring change? Likely-carcinogenic creosote remains in the ground and groundwater beneath the rail yard that Union Pacific owns in the historically Black community. The tar-like substance was used to treat the wood used as rail ties. The company insists residents aren’t at risk; for years, residents have argued otherwise. We want to foster conversation and highlight the intersection of race, identity and culture in one of America's most diverse cities.
