Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday appeared to bolster the conspiratorial claim, promoted by President Donald Trump, that it was Ukraine that hacked the DNC server in the 2016 White House race — even suggesting the administration may investigate the Eastern European nation over the debunked theory.
During a news conference at the State Department, a reporter asked Pompeo whether the U.S. and Ukraine should probe whether the government in Kyiv, not Russia, was responsible for breaking into the Democratic National Committee’s computer system during the previous presidential campaign.“Any time there is information that indicates that any country has messed with American elections, we not only have a right, but a duty to make sure we chase that down,” Pompeo said.
Despite the American intelligence community’s determination that Russian operatives hacked the DNC, the president has insisted that Ukraine played a role in the cyberattack and asserted without evidence that a physical server belonging to the party organization is hidden somewhere in Ukraine. In his infamous July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump pressured his foreign counterpart to investigate the unfounded allegations, which he“I still want to see that server,” Trump told the network Friday. “You know, the FBI's never gotten that server. That's a big part of this whole thing. Why did they give it to a Ukrainian company?”
