Gregg Popovich remembered LaMarcus Aldridge as a 'wonderful' player and 'great teammate' after learning of the former Spurs center's retirement.
SACRAMENTO - Spurs coach Gregg Popovich joked that LaMarcus Aldridge had an ulterior motive for sending him an invitation to the former NBA star's retirement party.Aldridge, who played 16 seasons in the NBA and was a seven-time All-Star, officially announced his retirement at 37 via Twitter on Friday. After earning four All-Star nods in nine seasons with Portland, the former Texas star signed with the Spurs as a free agent in 2015.
Aldridge leaves the NBA with career averages of 19.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. He recently worked out for Dallas with the hope of returning to the league. Playing without three starters, the Spurs led 88-87 after three quarters before the Warriors outscored them 43-27 in the fourth thanks to strong finishing kicks by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
