A popular coastal Alabama fishing pier has reopened to the public under county ownership.

He’s joined often by his Reel Fishing Crew buddies who regularly fish the sprawling pier that is open 24/7 at the entrance to Dauphin Island. The popular pier reopened on Monday with Harris, other members of the, and other visitors returning to their popular fishing spot. It had been closed for approximately four months after the county purchased the pier in December and invested around $50,000 to make repairs, renovations and remove unstable and worn areas.

But McRae said he has some worries. Noticeably absent from the pier is the bait shop that once stood at its entrance. It was demolished this winter. “My father started it 30 to 40 years ago and we all have worked here and grew up here,” he said. “My son’s first job was hauling trash out in the parking lot. We can’t just forget about it. We are concerned with how it goes.”

“Would it be more convenient ? Absolutely,” Dueitt said. “But on the other hand, less than a mile from here, there is a bait shop. I certainly don’t want to be competing with their business.” Out-of-state residents will require the license to fish, and they can purchase one through their cell phone while visiting the pier. Dueitt said that a code is displayed at the pier’s entrance that allows visitors to access the state’s Marine Resources Division website so they can purchase the fishing license.

He added, “The most important thing to do is to get the pier open so people can start fishing. Everything else will come in the future.” “The governor has not used those funds anywhere but in Mobile and Baldwin counties, but this makes everyone here feel a bit easier about those funds staying in those counties like they have been since the beginning,” said Chris Blankenship, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
