Porsche canceled development of a flat-eight supercar with a manual gearbox.
There are two breeds of Porsche concept car. If Porsche shows it at an auto show, there's a very real chance that car will end up in production. The Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, 2012 Panamera Sport Turismo concept, and the Mission E all resulted in production cars that looked quite similar, and we can expect the next, electric Cayman to look a lot like the Mission R concept.
However, Porsche has more concepts that never see the light of day until years later. Cars that were engineering test beds, design studies, or even tantalizingly close to going into production but canceled at the last minute. These are the more interesting ones.Before Porsche introduced a Cayman and Boxster with a flat-four, there was another car being developed as a successor to the 918.
This car sounds like it was wild, and right up our alley. The running mule had a 5.0-liter engine with twin turbos, putting out 750 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque and reportedly had a 9000-rpm redline. That was all linked to a manual gearbox. Yeah. Sounds crazy good. It was suddenly canceled during development, unfortunately, even as road tests were taking place around the factory. It just wasn't seen as the right car for Porsche at the moment. A shame because this sounds like it would've been an incredible supercar throwback unlike anything else out there.
