A top drug-testing laboratory collected data from employer drug tests for an annual report and discovered employees tested positive for marijuana at a record number last year.
Positive marijuana drug tests for employees soared in U.S. workplaces last year, according to Quest Diagnostics' annual drug index published on March 30.
Dr. Barry Sample, the director of science and technology at Quest Diagnostics, is a member of the data collection for the report. Federally mandated and safety-sensitive workers are characterized as pilots, bus and truck drivers, and workers in nuclear power plants, for whom routine drug testing is required by government agencies, according to Sample.According to the report, positive drug tests for cocaine and marijuana increased for federally mandated and safety-sensitive employees required to get tested under federal law.
Post-accident drug tests are tests performed by employers to test an employee involved in an accident in the workplace.in the general U.S. workforce, based on over six million urine tests, increased by 8.3% , the highest positivity rate ever reported in the drug testing index. Over five years, positivity rates for marijuana in the general U.S. workforce increased 50% .
