The Browns must make 21 moves to get to 53.
Here’s my prediction for the initial 53, with the caveat that things will change quickly when some injured players who make the active roster are placed on short-term injured reserve, where they must remain until four games have been played. This is because players placed on IR before Tuesday at 4 p.m. must remain there for the year.
Third-stringer Kellen Mond was pulled back off waivers that day, but he’ll land there against Tuesday — with a chance to return to the practice squad unless he’s claimed or signs elsewhere.The Browns acquired Strong by shipping promising young offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr. to the Patriots, which had to be bittersweet for offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who liked Wheatley a lot. But the Browns needed a third running back, and Strong is their guy.
Browns fans fell in love with receiver Austin Watkins during his excellent preseason, but the writing was on the wall for his release when I asked Kevin Stefanski last week if Watkins needed to be a force on special teams to make the team and answered unequivocally yes. Watkins doesn’t bring the return ability that some receivers do. He’s also the same big-body type as a Tillman, and wouldn’t have much of a role on game day. He’s a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
