President Joe Biden will travel to Texas next week for a stop in Fort Worth where the White House says he will “discuss upholding our sacred obligation to veterans.”
Biden also announced his administration was expanding eligibility to veterans suffering from nine respiratory cancers.“Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan faced many dangers,” he said. “One was stationed at bases and breathing in toxic smoke from ‘burn pits’ that incinerated wastes of war — medical and hazard material, jet fuel, and more. When they came home, many of the world’s fittest and best trained warriors were never the same. Headaches. Numbness. Dizziness.
Biden said he knows the issue well. His son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015. Beau Biden was a major in the Army National Guard and had been deployed to Iraq in 2009. “We don’t know for sure if a burn pit was the cause of his brain cancer, or the diseases of so many of our troops,” Biden said. “But I’m committed to finding out everything we can.”
