Megan Rapinoe has been honing her message for most of her career. Now her vision intersects perfectly with the political moment
her intention to “fight for equal pay every day for myself, for my team, and for every single person out there—man, woman, immigrant, U.S. citizen, person of color, whatever it may be.” Tothe executive director of EMILY’s List, Rapinoe’s potential is obvious. “You could see how genuine it was,” she said of Rapinoe’sinterview. “It really made me think, I could see her making a speech like that at a town hall or on a debate stage down the line.
Rapinoe seemed to burst full blown onto the national stage, but in reality she’s been honing her message and delivery for most of her career. As one of the most prominent soccer players in the country, she’s been giving interviews—not to mention speaking out about equal pay and LGBTQ rights—for years. Politically, she seemed fully formed, as comfortable on a talk show as on a soccer pitch.
From a perch in DC, Rapinoe would theoretically have the best chance of moving broad-strokes issues she feels strongly about, like LGBTQ rights and equal pay. But of course, gridlock is always a factor. “Quite frankly, it’s probably not as sexy, but I would tell her to run for mayor of Seattle or Portland,” Anzalone said, noting that it’s often easier to “get real things done for real people” at the state and local levels.
