Barbara Walters, a pioneer in journalism, died Dec. 30 at the age of 93.
ABC's Barbara Walters, photographed in 2004, broke barriers for women as the first female co-host of the “Today” show and the first female anchor of a network evening news program. As an interviewer of celebrities, she became one herself. When Barbara Walters died Dec. 30 at 93, America paid tribute, calling her a trailblazer, legend, an icon andabout how Walters didn’t take no for an answer. “Every female broadcast journalist working today owes a debt of gratitude to the O.G.
In 1976, Walters joined ABC News, becoming the first female anchor on an evening news program. Three years later, she became a co-host of “20/20.” In 1997, she launched “The View.” She exhibited brave, disarming honesty. In 1999, she told Monica Lewinsky: “You showed the president your thong underwear. Where did you get the nerve? I mean — who does that?”
My favorite Walters interview came in 1995 with Christopher Reeve and his wife, Dana, talking about the accident the year before that left him paralyzed.“What this man showed us above all is what we are is in here,” she said, pointing to her head, “our soul is here, our heart is here, our intelligence is here.”
