Thieves stole three 'priceless' sets of Baroque jewelry from the 18th century from Dresden’s Green Vault, one of the world’s oldest museums.
Police officers work behind a caution tape at the Schinkelwache building in Dresden Monday, Nov. 25, 2019. Authorities in Germany say thieves have carried out a brazen heist at Dresden’s Green Vault, one of the world’s oldest museum containing priceless treasures from around the world.
The treasury of Augustus the Strong of Saxony was established in 1723 and today contains around 4,000 objects of gold, precious stones and other materials on display in the historic palace. “We cannot give a value because it is impossible to sell,” she said, appealing to the thieves not to break the ensembles into pieces.The governor of Saxony, where Dresden is located, said the treasures in the vault contained items collected over many hundreds of years.
Exhibition rooms at the museum include focus on treasures featuring jewels, ivory, silver and amber among other objects.
