Harrison Township Mayor Lou Manzo said he received calls from outraged residents, then met with Police Chief Ron Cundey to discuss an action plan. Harrison Township police began an investigation and filed a bias incident form with the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.“This appalling act is not representative of our community and we have received numerous messages and inquiries expressing outrage and disgust as word of the vandalized banners has spread,” Manzo said in a prepared statement.
June is Pride Month, and the Pride banners were hung to acknowledge Harrison Township’s support of LGBTQ+ rights, its leaders said. The banners had been hung in prior years without incident, police said. Harrison Police Lt. David Marro said it is believed the vandalism occurred late Saturday night, when someone climbed the poles and tore the word “pride” from the banners.
