The sweater was one of the first pieces designed and created by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne for the knitwear label. A few weeks after Diana wore it to one of Prince Charles’ polo matches in June 1981, Muir and Osborne received a letter from Buckingham Palace that informed them that Diana adored the sweater, but it had been damaged. So the Warm & Wonderful team knitted her a new one and later received a grateful thank you note from Diana’s secretary, Oliver Everett CVO.
Since Diana was photographed wearing the sweater, it has become an “emblem of royal history,” Sotheby’s says. Warm & Wonderful has even updated its tagline to “Home of the Original Sheep Sweater.” From T-shirts to sweatshirts, look-alikes abound, especially after a similar style was featured on the fourth season of the Netflix series. Warm & Wonderful stopped producing the sheep sweater in 1994, then reissued it in 2020. Today, you can pre-order a “Diana Edition” cotton recreation for $248 onBut bid wisely and you can own THE sweater, which is valued at an estimated $50,000 to $70,000.from August 31 through September 14.
