Cavalcante was captured Wednesday after eluding hundreds of searchers for two weeks.A corrections officer warned staff at the Chester County Prison that convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante was planning an escape several weeks before Cavalcante successfully did so, according to a news report.
The email, obtained under Pennsylvania’s right-to-know law, was forwarded by Griswold to the prison’s acting warden, Howard Holland, a few hours later. Cavalcante had been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, whom he stabbed 38 times in front of her two children, and led authorities on a two-week manhunt across Chester County after escaping from the prison.
Despite this, Cavalcante was allowed to be in the prison yard with other detainees during a recreation period, and was not directly supervised by a correctional officer. The prison’s escape risk protocols that require that direct supervision only apply to detainees who are not on prison grounds.
