Prometheus is a great prequel for another Alien.

While 1979's Alien is widely recognized as a classic, Prometheus failed to produce an equally compelling backstory. One problem was that the tone and ideas of the two movies simply didn't meld. Alien is mostly unconcerned with the wider world and what the presence of the aliens mean for humanity; at its heart, Alien is a haunted house horror, with a queasy atmosphere and queasier bursts of gore.
Prometheus Is A Much Better Prequel To Alien 3 Alien 3, directed by David Fincher, is interested in the same kind of themes and ideas as Prometheus, both movies muse about religion and the trials humanity is put through. Prometheus follows a ship of humans and android David on a quest to find the Engineers who created humanity - only to succumb to a sinister black goo and find out the Engineers also wanted to destroy them.
This works well as a prequel to Alien 3, which delved more deeply into religious and existential themes both overtly and under the surface, using the religious setting of the penal colony Ripley lands on. The original Alien used its particularly unsettling brand of body horror to explore dark, Freudian fears surrounding sex, pregnancy, and birth.
Alien 3's Religious Themes Tie Into Prometheus All this is the perfect set-up for Prometheus, which uses the Engineers to engage with the questions of humanity and creation. Prometheus's sequel Alien: Covenant goes further, having David act as a creator himself. Alien 3 sets up a new set of themes and anxieties, which are then picked up and in some ways answered by Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
