One thing that’s sorely lacking in this genre, however, is the contribution of female directors. Quentin Tarantino made; it’s still one of the best revenge movies of all time, one with many distinctly empowered female characters, but it’s hard not to wonder what a revenge movie—particularly one in which a female character grapples with rape—might look like if it were helmed by a woman., which stars Carey Mulligan as a vigilante who goes out at night doling out justice to creepy guys.
Mulligan’s character’s backstory is alluded to in the trailer—she dropped out of med school for unknown reasons, but it’s heavily implied she has her own history with sexual assault—and after every new man leaves her place, she’s seen adding tallies to a notebook. “Every week, I go to a club and act like I’m too drunk to stand. And every week a nice guy comes over to see if I’m okay,” she says. It’s unclear what she’s going to do to these guys, but the film’s #MeToo message is immediately clear.
