If the board votes to increase the fares, it would be a move that could impact millions of riders who use subways, buses and commuter rail.At the MTA officials' last scheduled meeting of the summer, potential fare hikes almost dominated the public comment portion right off the bat."I do not want to pay for $2.90 as a working class single mother," another said.

In May, the MTA announced proposed rate hikes for both single rides and monthly passes.A seven-day ticket would go up $1 to $34.Express bus fares would rise to $7."A lot of people are hardworking and trying their best already and it's just adding onto that. A few more cents make a big difference to a lot of people," Manhattan resident Derrick LeBlanc said.
