All hail the gloriously in-your-face Adam Sandler thriller UncutGems.
, but to be honest, that was a pretty long 209 minutes. I prefer my crime movies lean and mean—which is why IJosh and Benny Safdie’s gloriously unglamorous, exhilaratingly tense Manhattan Diamond District thriller,If you’ve seen the Safdies’ movies before—2017’s—you won’t go into this one unprepared.is in your face; it’s gaudy, maximalist, headlong, vérité. The talk among gem dealers, hustlers, tough guys, con men, wives, and girlfriends is cacophonous. The camera never stops moving.
It’s also an Adam Sandler movie, though not like any Sandler movie since his last outing with an auteur, Noah Baumbach’s. This movie, like those, reminds us that Sandler has been slumming it in disposable comedies for most of his career. He utterly disappears into his role as Howard Ratner, a gem dealer with problems galore, including gambling debts and an exotic opal he’s imported from Africa with the quixotic intention of wiping them away and making a killing.
