Russia's Putin lauds 'huge' progress and 'restoration' of Syrian statehood in talks with regime leader Assad, as Mideast boils with prospect of Iran-US conflict
A handout picture released by Syrian regime shows regime leader Bashar al Assad visiting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus, one of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in the Syrian capital, near Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East John X Yazigi .
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the agencies that in talks with Assad, Putin had underlined "that a huge distance has been travelled towards restoring Syrian statehood and the country's territorial integrity." "Putin also noted that on the streets of Damascus the signs of how peace has been restored can be seen with the naked eye," according to Peskov.
"The Syrian president [regime leader] expressed appreciation for the help of Russia and the Russian military in the fight against terrorism and the restoration of peaceful life in Syria," Peskov said.
