Second-seeded Rinky Hijikata, who lost in the qualifying round, now turns his attention to the doubles tournament with Jason Kubler.Qualifying for the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship continues today at River Oaks Country Club with six of the eight seeds still vying for four spots in the main draw.
But the second-seeded, Rinky Hijikata, isn’t among them. Hijikata lost in three sets to Brandon Holt, 6-7 , 6-3, 6-2. He’s still in the tournament, however, playing doubles with Jason Kubler. The Australians won the Australian Open in January in their first tournament they had played together, and they could be on the court Monday when main-draw matches begin. Kubler’s schedule will dictate because he’s seeded sixth in singles.
Holt, 24 and the son of two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin, plays fifth-seeded Thomas Machac, who’s from the Czech Repulic, in the second match this afternoon on Court 3. Play begins at 11 a.m. with the fourth-seeded Zizou Bergs of Belgium facing the Aussie Aleksander Vukic, who defeated the sixth seed, Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, 6-4, 7-5. On Court 7, the top-seeded Yosuke Watanuki of Japan faces Felipe Meligeni of Brazil at 11 a.m.
Two of the qualifiers will square off against each other in the first round with the other two meeting Americans Denis Kudla and Jack Sock, who won the tournament in 2015.
